Alterations and Gearbox Repairs

The noise potential of a gearbox is mostly from the vibrations caused by gear interaction. You should consult your manufacturer to determine the best solution. The following are some options for reducing noise levels:

Change the Gear Type. Switching the teeth of a gear drive from spur gearing to helical gearing may help with more consistent and uniform contact. Helical gearing has the best maximum-to-minimum contact length ratio and can reduce friction.

Reduce the Gear Tooth. In some cases, minimally altering the shape of the gear tooth may help reduce noise. Removing a small amount of material near the gear tooth's tip, called tip relief, can reduce friction. Another example is crowning, or creating a more oval tooth shape by reducing the amount of material on either end of the gear tooth. However, these alterations may negatively affect the gear's durability.

If the gear teeth are the problem, contact your gear drive manufacturer for assistance or consider gearbox repair.

Identify the Source

Gear drive units are a common cause of excessive noise.
