If  gearbox  repairs or alterations are of no use, take steps to control the amount of noise the gear drives transmit through damping or isolation.

Sound Barriers/Damping. Use sound barriers or damping devices, such as honeycomb sheeting, to absorb noise created by the drive. Sound absorbing panels work well for higher-frequency noise.

Isolate the Gear Drive. Additional low-frequency noise can be caused by vibrations between the gear drive and its mounting structure. Place a resilient material between the drive unit and its mounting structure to prevent vibration transmission.

Complete Enclosure. If the noise is extreme, enclose the entire gearbox with a structure that is rigid on the outside and airtight. Typically the enclosure will have a sound-absorbing material as an inner layer. To avoid a thermal problem in the gear drive, allow for some soundproof ventilation.

Worker Protection Measures

If possible, workers should not be located close to the equipment that emits excessive noise, and should use protective gear such as earplugs. Regularly run sound tests and provide hearing exams to check for safe noise levels.

The level of industrial machinery noise is a serious issue for the health and safety of workers because hearing damage is possible with prolonged exposure to high noise level. For this reason, noise reduction strategies should be in place to reduce the risk of injury to workers.
